Unintended pregnancies can affect mothers, infants and families in negative ways. If a pregnancy is not planned, a woman may not be as healthy as she could be.
Good nutrition, avoiding alcohol, certain medications, or other drugs, quitting tobacco, and taking a folic acid supplement can help reduce pregnancy and infant-related
problems. Women who have unintended pregnancies may also delay prenatal care, which can affect the health of both the infant and the mother.
CDC
The United States has set a national goal of reducing the number unintended pregnancies to 30% by 2010. While the
unintended pregnancy rate in Snohomish County has dropped, 55.7 % of all pregnancies are still unintended.

What's "Take Charge?"
Take Charge is a Washington State program that covers family planning services for men and women who are not receiving Medicaid. You
may qualify simply by not having family planning (birth control) coverage under a medical insurance plan, and/or if you meet certain
income guidelines. For more information about
Take Charge, call (1-800) 770-4334.
What Family Planning Services Are Covered Under Washington State Medicaid programs and Take Charge?
Talk with your health care provider about using your Medicaid or Take Charge coverage for the family planning method that's right for you.
Reproductive health physical exams, including Pap tests for women, are covered.
Covered
birth control methods include:
Prescriptions: most contraception methods requiring a prescription from a health care provider are available- birth control pills, Ortho Evra patch,
NuvaRing vaginal ring, Depo-Provera shots, Mirena IUD, Copper (ParaGard) IUD, Implanon implant, diaphragm and cervical cap.
Over the counter: Many brands of over-the-counter contraceptives such as male/female condoms and spermicides are covered. You can get these without
a prescription with your medical coupon at pharmacies accepting Medicaid. Go to the pharmacy cashier for these items.
Permanent: The permanent contraceptive methods of tubal ligation (for women) and vasectomy (for men) are covered.
Emergency Contraception Pills: Emergency Contraception (EC, Plan B, Morning-After pill) is available over-the-counter at many pharmacies to women
and men 18 years and older. Women under 18 years of age may receive EC at family planning clinics, by prescription, or from a pharmacist who can prescribe
and distribute EC.
Emergency Contraception
Are you in need of emergency contraception? If EC is taken within 24-120 hours (1-5 days) after unprotected sex, it can greatly reduce the likelihood of
pregnancy by 75-89%. It is most effective if taken within the first 24 hours. EC is available with or without a prescription and the cost is covered by
Washington State Medicaid programs and TAKE CHARGE. Call your local family planning clinic or call 1-888-NOT-2-LATE (1-888-668-2528) for help in finding EC.
