Child Care Health Program (CCHP)
Class And Workshop Descriptions

  Two-Hour Classes ( Earn 2 STARS Credits )

  • Behavior Management - 2 hours
    Identify ways that babies communicate their needs and feelings. Recognize that children learn how they feel about themselves by how adults relate and respond to them. Discuss how contingency, responsiveness, and verbal behaviors influence the cognitive, social, and emotional development of babies and toddlers.


  • Cavity Free Kids - 2 hours
    Discuss why oral health is important. Explore the relationship between nutrition and oral health. Identify ways to incorporate different activities that involve oral health into daily schedules. Participate in fun oral health activities involving puppets, food activities, and different recipes.


  • Feeding Infants & Toddlers - 2 hours
    Through videos and discussion explore the connection between feeding young children and child development. Review the normal feeding behaviors of infants and young children. Learn how to support children's development and learning through feeding and mealtime interaction.


  • Food Safety in Child Care - 2 hours
    Recognize the importance of food safety in child care. Review safe food handling and sanitation practices. Review safe food handling and sanitation practices. Identify potentially hazardous food and proper food storage. Obtain a Washington State Food Worker Card at the end of class for a fee of $10 (cash only).


  • Germbusters - 2 hours
    Identify the steps necessary to reduce the spread of disease in child care. Recognize the difference between cleaning and sanitizing. Distinguish the difference between diaper area and general purpose sanitizing solutions. Participate in the Glo-Germ TM activity to demonstrate good hand washing techniques. Review methods to reduce the spread of bloodborne pathogens.


  • Mealtimes in Child Care - 2 hours
    Through videos and interactive format explore ways to make eating a pleasant learning opportunity for children. Discuss how to apply the division of responsibilities during meals, troubleshoot how to eliminate mealtime struggles and help children develop healthy eating habits.


  • Playground Safety - 2 hours
    Identify the essentials of outdoor injury prevention, including play area design, maintenance and supervision. Recognize the importance of having a diverse and age-appropriate play area.


  • Reducing TV Time and Media Use - 2 hours
    Identify the different types of media and how they can influence children and their environment.


  • Severe Allergies - 2 hours
    Recognize the signs, symptoms, and causes of food allergies. Acquire tools to effectively manage food allergies in the child care setting.


  • Social Beginnings - 2 hours
    Learn the seven common hurtful behaviors in pre-school children and why children exhibit those behaviors. Identify ways to reduce hurtful behavior and develop positive social behaviors. Practice the responding steps to a child's hurtful behavior.


  Distance Learning (DL) Classes ( Earn 2 STARS Credits )

Distance Learning Classes (DL) allow child care providers to earn 2 STARS credits and work at their own pace to complete class components (reading, completing an assignment, and a test) completed within a one month timeframe. Classes vary from month to month. Check with the current class schedule to see what is available now.
  • Abuse & Neglect
    Learn signs that may indicate physical, emotional, or sexual abuse or neglect. Determine when to report to Child Protective Services and what happens after a report.


  • ADD/ADHD
    Receive information about how to work with a child with an attention disorder. Obtain resources to learn more about ADD/ADHD.


  • Air Quality & Asthma
    Learn the importance of good indoor air quality for a healthy child care environment. Discuss common air contaminants and their affect on children. Identify triggers for asthma episodes. Identify components of an Asthma Plan of Care including information about symptoms, triggers, medications and emergency procedures. Gain resources for working with kids with asthma.


  • Controlling Lice
    Recognize control measures necessary to prevent a lice infestation. Learn about the life cycle of lice and identify effective treatments. Obtain information about the use of pesticides in the child care setting and how the pesticide use law affects child cares.


  • Disaster Preparedness
    Determine if your facility is ready for an emergency. Identify methods for preparing children, families and staff. Review possible disasters that could occur in Snohomish County.


  • Environmental Health Activities
    A healthy environment helps all of us live a better quality of life. Participate in activities designed to help children understand, appreciate, and conserve their environment and learn how to use these activities in your classroom and daily routines.


  • Indoor Environments for Infants & Toddlers
    Discuss the importance of creating a safe and exciting indoor play environment for infants and toddlers. Identify how to choose toys and design areas that are age appropriate for the unique needs of this age group. Analyze hazards that may be hiding in your child care.


  • Menu Planning
    Discuss the benefits of developing a menu and preparing nutritious and appealing meals that are easy and cost effective. Develop a sample menu and take home some new recipes.


  • Reducing TV Time and Media Use
    Identify the different types of media and how those can influence children and their environment. Discuss how media affects behavior and the way the brain develops.


  • Self Esteem Activities for Kids
    Building strong self-esteem can help children develop confidence, character and strong decision-making skills. Participate in a variety of self-esteem activities designed to help children celebrate their uniqueness. Learn how to use these activities in your classroom and daily activities.


  • Sexual Development in Young Children
    Identify ways to assist families with resources and information about sexuality education. Determine normal and problematic sexual behaviors for infancy through school aged children and learn tips for answering questions about sexuality appropriately and accurately.


  • Stress Management
    Identify how stress affects the body. Analyze stress in your life and how to control it. Explore what stress management techniques may benefit you and children in your care.


  • Toxics in Child Care
    Hazardous natural and man-made substances are everywhere in the environment where our children live and play. Some can affect brain development and cause cancer. Find out about the dangers of lead, arsenic, pesticides, and chemicals found in everyday household products. Learn to identify sources of chemicals and get tips on minimizing exposure.


  Four-Hour Workshops ( Earn 4 STARS Credits )

  • Disaster Plan Workshop - 4 hours
    Receive hands-on assistance in writing a disaster plan to meet the specific needs of your facility. Valuable resources will be shared to help you, your staff, children in your care and families prepare for and respond to a disaster. (Attendance at a Disasters: Be Aware and Prepared class is strongly recommended prior to attending this workshop.) This class is best suited for home providers and center managers.


  • Indoor Environments for Infants & Toddlers - 4 hours
    Discuss the stages of infant and toddler development and the importance of creating a safe and exciting indoor play environment. Identify how to choose toys and design areas that are age appropriate for the unique needs of this age group. Analyze hazards that may be hiding in your child care and identify different community resources. Obtain additional information on SIDS and discuss the roles of the child care provider in preparing for SIDS.


  • Physical Activity & Development - 4 hours
    Summarize current trends and prevalence of overweight children. Explore concepts of physical activity and discuss how it contributes to a child's health and development. Participate in activities that would be appropriate for structured movement time, including locomotion, non-locomotion and food activities.


  • Social Beginnings - 4 hours
    Learn the seven common hurtful behaviors in pre-school children and why children exhibit those behaviors. Identify ways to reduce hurtful behavior and develop positive social behaviors. Practice the responding steps to a child's hurtful behavior.
