Tooth decay continues to be the most common chronic disease of children. Mobile dental programs can be an opportunity to
expand preventive services to high-risk children in your schools and school district. If you have any questions or

In April 2001, Washington State Administrative Code adopted legislation (
Access to dental care for children ) which facilitates school based dental services for high-risk
children by easing supervision requirements of dental providers. Specifically, the legislation addresses the credentials of
dental providers and the legal necessity of supervision for non-licensed staff while providing dental sealants and/or fluoride
varnishes in school settings. As a result, your school and/or school district may be approached by mobile dental service providers.
This new legislation requires mobile dental providers, working with this expanded scope of practice, to approach schools after
contacting the local health jurisdiction.. We provide the mobile provider with a Letter of Understanding.
This does not imply endorsement of the individual provider services.
Frequently asked questions and answers

and deciding if a mobile dental program is appropriate. This is a decision of your school district. We recommend that you consult
with your legal advisor prior to making a decision.
