Oral Health Program > Fluoride Supplements

Fluoride drops/tablets (supplements) are recommended when the primary source of drinking water has too little fluoride to protect teeth.

There is a small risk of developing mild dental fluorosis with the use of fluoride supplements; therefore the Centers for Disease Control recommends the use of supplements for children at higher risk for tooth decay. Fluoride supplements are provided according to the age of the child and the amount of naturally occurring fluoride in the drinking water to minimize the risk for fluorosis.

Professionally Applied Fluorides

Enamel Fluorosis
New guidelines indicate that children at low risk for developing tooth decay may not obtain additional benefits from the use of professionally applied fluorides. Children at moderate or high risk can benefit from professionally applied fluorides at least twice a year.

Professionally applied fluorides include fluoride gels, foams, rinses and varnishes.
