Bright Futures in Oral Health for Children in Childcare Programs: Snohomish Health District in collaboration with many others has developed a guideline and quality assurance tool for developing oral health materials for use with very young audiences. Staff and/or parent training can be scheduled with staff from the Snohomish Health District.

STARS/staff training
STARS training for childcare providers on oral health is provided in collaboration with the Snohomish Health District Childcare Health Program ( CCHP ) or contact lcooper@shd.snohomish.wa.gov about specific training requests.

Elementary schools

Tooth Tote and Tooth Tutor
Curriculum and teaching materials aligned with Bright Futures and OpenWide designed specifically for Washington State. All elementary schools in Snohomish County were provided curriculum and materials. Sno-Isle Skill Center students use the Tooth Tote and Tooth Tutor to present oral health education in Snohomish County schools each year. A Tote and materials are available on loan from the Snohomish Health District

Open Wide and Trek Inside
Open Wide and Trek Inside: The NIH Curriculum Supplement Series is an interactive teaching unit that combines cutting-edge research discoveries from the National Institutes of Health, one of the world's foremost medical research centers, with state-of-the-art instructional materials. Each supplement is a teacher's guide to two weeks' of lessons on science and human health. This series (is):

Other Resources for Teaching Oral Health in Schools:
  • California Dental Association (CDA)
    Offers the Dental health education resource guide (2006) for teachers focusing on the importance of good oral health and preventive oral health care. It is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on dental health education for students in preschool through second grade. The second part focuses on students in third through fifth grade. Each part contains teaching goals and objectives in addition to age-appropriate games and puzzles.

  • Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures
    Presents Bright Smiles, Bright Futures: An oral health education program for grades K through 3 (2006) containing oral-health-education materials for teachers of students in kindergarten through third grade. The program incorporates language arts, science, math, and social studies activities. Program components include two classroom curriculum guides, 10 videotape chapters with teacher instructions and student activities, a storybook, a game, a message for parents, and two posters.

  • Kids Connect:
    Washington Oral Health Foundation www.wohfkidsconnect.com/kids - Interactive information for school children put together in collaboration with the Washington State Dental Association

  • Smile Smarts! Oral Health Curriculum
    Presents an oral health curriculum for students in preschool through eighth grade offering flexible, modular lesson plans, support materials, hands-on classroom demonstrations, student activity sheets, and suggestions for further oral health activities. Smile Smarts! is an initiative of the American Dental Association (ADA).
