Food and Living Environment Section > Schools Health and Safety Program
The School Health and Safety Program reviews plans, reviews construction and makes periodic inspections of K-12 schools
(public and private). This program verifies compliance with minimal environmental standards for educational facilities,
as per WAC 246-366-040. For example, inspectors may check lighting, ventilation, playground equipment and safety equipment
in laboratories and shops. The biennial inspections are done at approximately 200 public schools and 75 private schools,
which includes about 108,000 students in 7975 classrooms.
Applications for Permits
Before a new school facility is constructed, or an existing school facility is changed, the health officer will review the site as
per WAC 246-366-030. All existing environmental reports concerning the site should be submitted to the Snohomish Health District as
soon as they are made available, which may include geotechnical reports, noise surveys, documents relating to environmental impact
assessments, or documents relating to CERCLA Environmental Site Assessments.
Before construction of the school, or alteration of an existing facility, plans must be submitted with a plan review fee. Below
is the application and check list needed to be submitted.
