Welcome! The CHP is a partner project between the Snohomish Health District, The Interfaith Association of Snohomish County, Puget Sound Parish Nurse and Health Ministries, Providence Everett Medical Center, and participating individual faith communities. The project was first piloted in Snohomish County in 1999 with five local congregations. Start-up funding was provided by the Providence General Foundation. In 2002 CHP received additional grant funding from PEMC Deptartment of Mission Integration and Spiritual Care to expand the partnership. CHP now has 29 trained health ministry volunteers and staff and 26 faith community partners with numbers expanding.

What the CHP Does
Congregational health ministry volunteers work to bring health education and advocacy to the members of their faith communities. Health screenings, one-on-one education, newsletters, bulletin boards, and advocacy are some of the many activities of health ministry volunteers. The CHP provides training, support, and guidance for congregational health ministries and volunteers. CHP holds quarterly meetings during which volunteers share news, helpful tips, and expertise. A quarterly newsletter provides news on conferences, meetings, trainings, public health updates and other health-related topics. It is designed to be a resource for volunteers and congregation members and a forum for sharing ideas and experiences.

Snohomish Health District
The Community Mobilization Program of the Snohomish Health District (SHD) supports the Congregational Health Partnership with staff and student intern time, compiling and disseminating a quarterly newsletter, scheduling and facilitating quarterly meetings, and agency public health resources. The role of the Health District is primarily to provide the health education component support. The many public health programs and departments of SHD make available a large range of resource information for Health Ministry Volunteers to share with their congregations. We offer printed handouts & brochures, web and electronic resources, training manuals, films and speakers relating to any of the SHD program areas.

SHD provides the professional staff time of a health educator and a public health nurse as resource people to answer questions, collect resource information and assist with health education/ advocacy needs of the congregational health partners. Partners have access to these staff during business hours as needed.

Q&A
Q: I would like to prepare a presentation about healthy snacks for parents - focusing on back to school and after school snacks in the fall. Are there handouts or other resources that I can use?

A: SHD has two programs that specifically deal with healthy eating for children. Partners in Child Care (PiCC) has a staff nutritionist, Katy Levenhagen, who consults with child care providers about healthy eating and can be an excellent resource for handouts. Also, our Oral Health Program offers resources specifically designed to educate parents about sugar content in foods and healthy snack alternatives as well as dental hygiene, No Cavity Clubs and more. Staff contacts for the Oral Health Program are LeeAnn Hoaglin-Cooper and Donna Theer. For a really great program about healthy snacks, I suggest recruiting a few volunteers to make some healthy snacks for parents and kids to try out. I think too often we think of a healthy snack as a stick of celery or plain apple slices. With a little creativity, they can be spruced up with peanut or other nut butters, raisins, colored yogurt dips, etc. Offer recipes along with the samples, keep them fairly simple, and make sure everyone knows there will be food! You shouldn't have any problem getting folks to show up!!

These and other SHD program resources can be accessed by Congregational Health Partners through the Community Mobilization staff 425.339-8703 or the CHP Public Health Nurse Debbie Cartmell (425) 339-8654.
