The Communicable Disease Division conducts surveillance, investigation, education and disease prevention for reportable
communicable diseases.
The Communicable Disease Division is responsible for investigating reports of communicable diseases submitted by health
care providers and laboratories pursuant to WAC 246-100. These include enteric diseases, foodborne illnesses,
hepatitis, vaccine preventable diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis and animal bites. Case patients and their health care
providers are interviewed to assess the evidence for confirmation of disease, to elicit possible sources of exposure,
and (when indicated) to identify and locate exposed persons.
Communicable Disease Division staff conduct outbreak investigations, obtain specimens for laboratory testing, and administer
immunoprophylaxis or chemoprophylaxis to exposed persons when appropriate.
Education and consultation for non-reportable infectious diseases are also provided by the Communicable Disease
Division staff.
Most Communicable Disease Control services are provided on sliding fee scale to the community.
