Health Data & Reports
Data on health are used to educate and inform others about the magnitude, trends, or changes occurring in a multitude of health measures. The epidemiology of person, time, and place assists the community in determining how, where, and when health threats are occurring. Data help prioritize needs, mobilize communities, garner resources, plan programs and activities, and develop policies to improve health. In times of shrinking resources, it is essential to be data smart in order to evaluate both current needs and plan for the future.
Data Resources
Health Statistics & Assessment (HSA) has a repository of more than 20 health databases. Examples of health data include:
  • Vital Statistics - births, deaths, abortions, fetal death
  • Health Surveys - adult and youth risk factors and behaviors, pregnant mothers, oral health
  • Other Surveys - census, health provider shortage areas for primary care and dental providers
  • Other - hospitalizations, cancer, communicable diseases
Data Requests
HSA completes data requests related to public health for the Health District and external agencies and individuals. Examples of analysis include the following: Snohomish County rates, proportions, demographics, trends, and comparisons. Specific examples include Snohomish County rates of low birth weight compared with the rates of Washington State, the prevalence of obesity for different age groups, etc.

Pregnancy Outcomes
Pregnancy outcomes include the rate of low birth weight (for singleton births), preterm births and multiple births. Snohomish County rates are compared with the Washington State rate and to the most recently available national data.
Pregnancy Risk Factors
Pregnancy risk factors, including smoking during pregnancy and early initiation of prenatal care, are presented in the data sheets below. Snohomish County values are compared with Washington State and to the most recently available national data.
Fertility Rates
Data sheets for the crude birth rate, the teen birth rate and the general fertility rate are presented in the documents below. The crude birth rate is the number of births per 1000 population. The teen birth rate is the number of births to women 15-17 per 1000 women 15-17 years old. The general fertility rate is the number of births to women of all ages per 1000 women in the population of age 15-44. Snohomish County values are compared with Washington State and to the most recently available national data.

Top Ten Causes of Death in Snohomish County
The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) classifies the leading causes of death in the United States. The ten leading causes of death in Snohomish County are presented in the documents below. For each data sheet, the age-adjusted death rates for Snohomish County and Washington State are presented. Significant trends and differences between the county- and statewide-rate are identified. Comparisons are also made with the most recently available national data. Data for all cause mortality is also presented.
Other Notable Causes of Death
In addition to the top ten leading causes of death, are a series of data sheets for diseases of public health importance. Some of these causes of death are included in the broader categories above. For example, lung, colon, prostate and breast cancer are included in the overall cancer rate and motor vehicle collisions are included in the unintentional injury rate. For each data sheet, the age-adjusted death rates for Snohomish County and Washington State are presented. Significant trends and differences between the county- and statewide-rate are identified. Comparisons are also made with the most recently available national data.
Infant Mortality
Infant mortality is the death of an infant during the first 365 days of life. The infant mortality data sheet presents the infant mortality rate in Washington State and Snohomish County. Rates of neonatal (within 28 days) and post neonatal (28-365) deaths are presented. Deaths due to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) are also presented.
