Seasonal Influenza Vaccination
Yearly flu vaccination services are provided at both immunization clinic locations. Flu vaccines
are available beginning in the fall through the spring each year. Influenza vaccine is licensed
for age 6 months and older.
Anyone who wants to be protected from the flu is encouraged to be vaccinated, especially
those at high risk for complications: the young, the elderly, and anyone with a chronic medical condition.
Vaccination is your best protection against the flu
Two kinds of flu vaccine are available:
- The "flu shot" — an inactivated vaccine (containing killed virus) that is given
by injection, usually in the arm. The flu shot is approved for use in anyone aged 6 month
or older, including both healthy people and those with chronic medical conditions (such as
asthma, diabetes, or heart disease). See also Questions & Answers: Seasonal Flu Shot (CDC).
- The nasal-spray flu vaccine — a live attenuated vaccine (containing live,
weakened flu virus) that is sprayed into the nose. It is not able to cause influenza
even though it is a live virus formulation. The nasal spray (sometimes called LAIV
for “live attenuated influenza vaccine” or FluMist®) is approved only for healthy,
non-pregnant people aged 2 years through 49 years of age.
Persons who should get vaccinated each year:
- all persons 6 months of age and older. Vaccination is especially important for
people at higher risk of severe influenza and their close contacts, including healthcare
personnel and close contacts of children younger than 6 months.
Note: Children age 6 months to 9 years receive two flu shots the first year they are vaccinated.
- anyone residing or working in long-term care facilities
- anyone living with or caring for those at high risk for complications from the flu
- all household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of infants aged birth to 6
months (because they are too young to receive the shot)
Payment:
Payment is due on the day of service by check or cash. The Snohomish Health District
does not accept credit or debit cards and does not bill private insurance. Most
medical coupons are accepted. Medicare is accepted for flu and pneumonia vaccines
for those clients not assigned to a provider and who have Part B coverage.

Travel Immunization
Travel consultations and immunizations are provided by appointment at both clinics. Services
include pre-travel counseling, immunizations, and health advice for adults and children who
are planning to travel out of the U.S.
Health Risks
Your risk of becoming ill when traveling depends, in part, on the areas you plan to
visit, your length of stay, your style of travel, your health, and your vaccine
history. In some cases, international tourist destinations are in highly developed
areas where you should simply observe health precautions similar to those in the
United States. However, because of differences in living standards and sanitary
conditions, food and water safety, and immunization coverage, your risk of illness
is higher if you are traveling in developing countries and/or rural areas.
Plan ahead
Travel consultations are by appointment only. Call 4-6 weeks before your anticipated
departure to make your appointment. Most vaccines take 2-4 weeks to build the
antibodies necessary to protect you from the disease they prevent. It is important
to bring complete immunization records for each traveler. Please allow 60-90 minutes
for your appointment; longer if there are multiple travelers. The consultation includes:
- Country-by-country analysis of your itinerary and possible health hazards,
anticipated activities, evaluation of your immunization status and review of
your health history to develop an individualized plan.
- Advice on malaria prophylaxis and necessary prescriptions. Prescriptions
are filled at the traveler's expense at their pharmacy of choice.
- Information and prescriptions for medications to help prevent or treat
illness while traveling.
- Advice on the need for evacuation insurance.
- International Certificate of Vaccination as approved by the World Health
Organization.
