Ebola virus disease (EVD) update

Today’s topic: Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) update

Action requested: Use screening forms to guide decisions about when to contact public health and be aware of additional detailed guidance for protecting health care personnel.

Background & Recommendations

There remains some confusion in the community about when to consider Ebola Virus Disease among travelers.  Only travelers from three countries present a risk.  Those countries are Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea.  Travelers from any other countries should be managed as you would any other patients.  Please do not call the Health District unless a patient has been in Liberia, Sierra Leone, or Guinea within the past 21 days AND has a fever (≥100.4o F) or symptoms consistent with EVD.

To help clinicians decide when to be concerned about EVD, the Health District has developed checklists for clinics and hospitals.  You can find these checklists under Ebola Virus Disease screening forms on our Ebola website at http://www.snohd.org/Diseases-Risks/Ebola-Virus-Disease.

Also, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued new and detailed guidance for infection control and personal protective equipment (PPE), including explicit instructions for putting on and removing PPE.  This detailed guidance is a follow up to the more general guidance described in my health alert earlier today.  See http://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola/hcp/procedures-for-ppe.html.
