Snohomish County Board of Health declares April 3-9 Public Health Week

The new Board of Health passed the proclamation at its first meeting.

SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash. – The Snohomish County Health Department Board of Health met for the first time Tuesday afternoon.

During the meeting, the Board approved a proclamation to recognize the upcoming National Public Health Week in April.

The Board and Health Department will celebrate April 3-9, 2023, as Public Health Week. The theme at the national level this year is “Centering and Celebrating Cultures in Health.” A person’s health status can vary drastically due to where they live and social determinants that negatively impact health, including racism, poverty, adverse childhood experiences, transportation barriers, and lack of economic opportunity.

“Efforts to adequately support public health and the prevention of disease and injury can continue to transform a health system focused on treating illness into a health system focused on preventing disease and injury and promoting wellness,” according to the proclamation

The proclamation also thanks Department staff, public health partners, and community members who are dedicated to the improvement of health and well-being across Snohomish County. The Board approved the declaration unanimously.

The new Board was created following the integration of the former Snohomish Health District into Snohomish County.

The County Board of Health includes nine positions, eight of which are currently filled:

  • Janet Anderberg, Healthcare Provider
  • Megan Dunn, Chair, Snohomish County Council Member
  • Lisa George, Healthcare Facility Representative
  • Joseph Hund, Sultan City Council Member
  • Heather Logan, Vice Chair, Arlington City Council Member
  • Jared Mead, Snohomish County Council Member
  • Desmond Skubi, Community Stakeholder
  • Julie Smith-Hopkins, Public Health Consumer

The ninth position is for a Tribal representative to be nominated by the American Indian Health Commission. County code and State law outline the make-up of the Board and the descriptions of Board positions.

A separate Health District Board of Health will remain in place during the dissolution of the District but is not meeting regularly.
