Snohomish Health District announces "Excellence Award" winners

Local businesses recognized for safe food handling practices

Everett - Judged by their industry peers, seven food service establishments in Snohomish County are being recognized for their excellence in handling food safely. "Excellence Award" plaques will be presented to the winners at the Snohomish Health District board meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 13, in the Snohomish Health District auditorium, 3020 Rucker Ave., Everett. The meeting begins at 3 p.m. and is open to the public.

"We have a lot of restaurants who do things right, and we wanted to recognize those facilities that are leaders in safe food practices," said Rick Miklich, program manager for Snohomish Health District’s Food and Living Environment Section.

Excellence Award categories and winners are:

Full Menu Establishment - Café Taka, 20101 — 44 th Ave. W. #E, Lynnwood; Taka Iwazaki, owner

Fast Service Establishment - Taco Time, 3805 Rucker Ave., Everett; Gordon Anderson, owner

Limited Menu Establishment - Sultan Pizza & Subs, 613 Stevens Ave., Sultan; Michelle A. Orr, owner

Grocery Store - Tienda Chapala, 9629 Evergreen Way, #203, Everett; Lizbeth and Jose Alfaro, owners

Schools/Industry/Institutions - Eldec Café, 16700-13 th Ave. W., Lynnwood; Food Management Corporation, operator

Temporary Food Service Establishment - Carousel Horse, Inc., 911 Broadway, Everett; Peggy Sue Wold, operator

Achievement in Limiting Bare Hand Contact - ARAMARK Corporation, Boeing District Office, 20415-72 nd Ave., S., Suite 220, Seattle; Randall Durant, district sanitarian

A 30-member food advisory committee considered 35 food service establishments that had been nominated by Snohomish Health District sanitarians. The committee includes restaurant owners, operators and chefs.

Snohomish Health District created the Excellence Awards in 1988 as a positive reinforcement of its restaurant and food service inspection program. The District’s cadre of 13 sanitarians inspects Snohomish County’s 2600 food service establishments between one and three times a year depending on menu.
