Today’s topics:

  • Influenza update
  • Sexually transmitted infections resource

Influenza update

Action requested:  Be aware that the number of cases of influenza in our region is increasing rapidly.

Background & Recommendations

The number of cases of influenza in our region has increased dramatically.  Providence Regional Medical Center Everett reported ten persons hospitalized for influenza this past week.  The Everett Clinic reported a sharp increase in influenza testing, with a very high proportion of tests positive for influenza A.  The influenza season has started in earnest.  Please encourage patients to get vaccinated, to cover coughs, to wash hands frequently, and to stay home if ill.  For detailed clinical guidance on testing, use of antiviral drugs, and vaccine recommendations, see https://www.cdc.gov/flu/professionals/index.htm.

Sexually transmitted infections resource

Action requested:  Be aware of a new consulting service to assist clinicians with questions about management of sexually transmitted infections.

Background & Recommendations

The National Network of STD Clinical Prevention Training Centers offers an online consulting service for clinicians.  See https://www.stdccn.org.  You can find detailed clinical guidance in the 2015 STD Treatment Guidelines at http://www.cdc.gov/std/tg2015/.
