SNOHOMISH COUNTY—Judged by their industry peers, seven food service establishments in Snohomish County will be recognized for their excellence in handling food safely. "Excellence Award" plaques will be presented to the winners at the Board of Health meeting Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the Snohomish Health District auditorium, 3020 Rucker Ave., Everett. The meeting begins at 3 p.m. and is open to the public.
"We have a lot of restaurants who do things right, and we want to recognize those facilities that are leaders in safe food practices," said Rick Miklich, program manager for Snohomish Health District’s Food and Living Environment Section.
Snohomish Health District created the Excellence Awards in 1988 as a positive reinforcement of its restaurant and food service inspection program. The public health team of 13 inspectors annually inspects Snohomish County’s 2600 food service establishments, and monitors food preparation at 25 local fairs and festivals in the summer months.
"Food safety is one of the most basic and important functions of public health and we believe we and our community partners are doing an excellent job of fulfilling this function in Snohomish County," said M. Ward Hinds, MD, MPH, Health Officer for Snohomish Health District.
A 30-member food advisory committee considered 35 food service establishments that had been
nominated by Snohomish Health District restaurant inspectors. The committee includes restaurant
owners, operators and chefs.
Excellence Award categories and winners are:
- Full Menu Establishment : La Palmera, 1018 164th St. SE, Mill Creek; Hector Mendoza, owner
- Fast Service Establishment : Brooster’s, 223 N Olympic Ave., Arlington; Bruce Bruch, owner
- Limited Menu Establishment : Let’s Go Espresso, 1124 Croft Ave., Gold Bar; Rose Friedli, owner
- Grocery Store : Haggen Food & Pharmacy #55, 26603 72nd Ave. NW, Stanwood; Paul Cooley, store manager
- School/Industry/Institution : East County Senior Center, 824 Village Way, Monroe
- Temporary Food Establishment : Pennsylvania Funnel Cakes West, 52714 Rainbow Dr., LaPine, Oregon; Bob & Gloria Landers, owners (vendors at local fairs and festivals)
- Achievement in Limiting Bare Hand Contact : Red Robin America's Gourmet Burgers & Spirits, 1305 SE Everett Mall Way, Everett; Missy Poirier and Kelly Paine, managers
The Snohomish Health District food program also is an award-winner itself, two times the recipient of the prestigious Crumbine Award—a national honor given by the food industry to local food protection programs. In addition to inspecting food facilities, the Health District offers classroom training for food handlers and managers.
