Want to make a difference? HIV/AIDS Council needs you

Regional group decides HIV/AIDS services & funding for five counties

EVERETT —The Region 3 HIV/AIDS Community Planning Council needs more members to represent all five counties in its area. The group is recruiting persons infected with HIV, service and health planning professionals, youth at risk, people of color and persons from populations most affected by HIV/AIDS in Island, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish and Whatcom counties. The Council wants to elect six new members to 1- and 2-year terms, bringing the total to a “full strength” 22 members.

“We have a vigorous agenda, and need caring members who can hit the ground running,” said Alex Whitehouse, Region 3 AIDS Service Network Coordinator. “The Council advises public health leaders and service providers on the use of public funds for HIV/AIDS prevention and care services. We establish priorities for HIV prevention services, and decide on the actual allocation of federal HIV/AIDS dollars to eligible consortia in the region,” he said. “It’s very important work that directs the federal funds to the local people who need it.”

Created in 1994 the Council operates independently of the agencies it funds, and is supported by a grant from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to oversee and help plan publicly funded programs for local communities.

Applicants should be broadly interested in HIV/AIDS issues. They need to attend a monthly meeting—usually in Mount Vernon. Members are reimbursed for travel and Council-related business expenses.

Completed applications must be received by the Council no later than Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002. The Council will select members by mid-March, and new members will begin their Council service in April.
