I Care...Do You?: World AIDS Day, Dec. 1

Local event focuses on Youth and AIDS in the 21st century

SNOHOMISH COUNTY--- The public is invited to attend World AIDS Day remembrance ceremonies Dec. 1 from 4-7 p.m. at the American Red Cross, 2530 Lombard Ave., Everett.

Sponsored by the Snohomish County HIV/AIDS Consortium, the event includes a short program, candlelight walk and refreshments.

World AIDS Day 2001 in the United States focuses on youth and HIV/AIDS, with the theme "I Care...Do You? Youth and AIDS in the 21st Century."

Observed annually on Dec. 1 since 1988, World AIDS Day is a global reminder of the challenges of the continuing AIDS pandemic. Snohomish County residents will join others throughout the world in memory of those who have died and those who are living with HIV/AIDS.

"The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to spread in Washington state and throughout the United States and the world," said M. Ward Hinds, MD, MPH, Health Officer for Snohomish Health District. "Halting this epidemic will require widespread acceptance of individual and societal responsibility for learning more about HIV infection, how transmission can be prevented and the importance of early diagnosis," he said. "The goal of World AIDS Day 2001 is to emphasize that young people continue to become infected and continue to be affected by HIV. Involvement of young people in prevention and early diagnosis of HIV infection is central to controlling this worldwide epidemic."
