First Steps
The First Steps program helps low-income pregnant women get the health and social services needed during pregnancy and baby’s first year. Nurses, social workers, and dietitians are here to lend support in making positive health care decisions such as where to go for prenatal care, how to prepare for the new baby, what to expect as a parent, and where to find help in the community. The First Steps visit is combined with the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) visit at our WIC First Steps Clinics in either Everett or Lynnwood. There is no charge for the services. Interpreters are available if needed.
First Steps program can help with:
  • Education regarding pregnancy/postpartum and infant care during the first year of baby’s life (specific to needs)
  • Brief counseling, education and linkage to available community resources regarding depression, anger, stress, relationships or parenting issues
  • Nutritional consultation on healthy eating during pregnancy, breastfeeding support and infant feeding for the first year
  • Transportation resources
  • Dental and vision care resources
  • Family planning
  • Growth, development and safety education during baby’s first year
  • Referrals for other community services for the family
